  KART Sprint Nationals

Friday July 18

OMC temperatures over the weekend hovered just over the triple digit mark with a steady wind making the air a little more bearable.  Altimeters were showing air density at the 4500 foot level.  Despite the heat, 205 entries made one of the finest family-oriented national kart races in America.

KART uses a pea-pick system to determine the starting positions of the first race.  The second race is an inverted starting order of the first race, and points awarded for the finish in each race determine the final grid order.  All three 8-lap heats count in points towards the KART National Sprint Championship.

The "Triad"

Racing was excellent in several classes, even those with small entries as the karts were very evenly matched.   Everyone came for their chance for the coveted "Triad".

Linda Baldus, co-founder of the KART organization, identified the key of this organization as family oriented racing.  Indeed, the KART Sprint Nationals certainly lived up to that intent.  Good clean racing, good clean fun.

Top 10 entertaining races were;

  1. Yamaha Heavy
  2. Jr 1 2-Cycle Light
  3. Rotax International
  4. Jr 1 2-Cycle Heavy
  5. Sr Sportsman
  6. Yamaha Light
  7. Jr Sportsman Super
  8. Rotax Max Jr
  9. Jr 2 Heavy 4-Cycle
  10. Jr 2 Super Briggs Unlimited

These race videos will coming to the subscribers theater soon.

Stock Medium
Rotax International
Jr. 2 Light 4 cycle
Yamaha Heavy
80/85cc Jr Gearbox
Formula 125 Stock Light

Kid Karts raced all 3 days with 6 entrants.  The 5-8 year old drivers of Kid Karts are all winners in the KART series, and were each given a commemorative trophy.

The names of the drivers were not provided in the scoring sheet, but as far as we can tell, the following drivers were there;

  • Evan Brown (in picture)
  • Brayden Mathis
  • TJ Michaels
  • Natalie Fenarilo

If your driver is missing, please email us the name.

80/85cc Sr Gearbox began with 4 entries but faded to 3 by the second race.  Finishing order was:
  1. Michael Brooks
  2. Johnny Johnson
  3. Adam Johnson
  4. Josh Oaks

Jr. 1 Light 4 cycle brought out the sweet aroma of methanol for the first time of the weekend with 4 entries.  This was a close race and came down to making no mistakes.  Finishing order was:

  1. Crispin Beaver
  2. Cody Winkle
  3. Pierce Baldus
  4. Zachary Sanders

Stock Medium drew 3 entries of the Briggs powered karts having a finishing order of;

  1. Johnny Johnson
  2. Jason Jons
  3. Tom Phillips

Michael Johnson on the grid

Rotax International the first medium sized class of the day, had eight entries, a few who were working on qualifying for the Rotax Nationals.  This racing was close and action packed in the first two races.  In race 3 a turn 1 melee eliminated Jason Stanley and Michael Johnson from the opportunity to win.  Michael, who had been contesting in SKUSA SuperPro on a very evolutionary experimental chassis was offered a factory Arrows ride from CRC Racing along with tuning and support by the legendary Wayne Brown.

Race 3 put on a great battle among Josh Lygrisse and DJ Ortiz for second.  Heinz Mayer was right in there with them until he dropped off the track at turn 1 and fell back a few kart lengths.  The finishing order was:

  1. Nathaniel Mauel
  2. Josh Lygrisse
  3. DJ Ortiz
  4. Heinz Mayer
  5. Ron Brown
  6. Michael Johnson
  7. Jason Stanley
  8. Lee McGovern

Jr. 2 Light 4 cycle was another example of how a small number of juniors can really put on a good show.  The finishing order was;

  1. Skyler James
  2. Brandon Durrel
  3. Josh Phillips
  4. AJ Vasquez
  5. James Cypert

Yamaha Heavy put on the best show of the day, almost the best of the weekend.   Eighteen entries in the Yamaha Pipe classes are rare to see making this race a real treat to watch. The winner of Yamaha Heavy tends to go on to win some other large National Championship in the same year, can this year's winner do the same?  Mark Beville, a previous multiple KART champion who showed up only about a 1/2 hour before the last race came up just to try out the challenging OMC track.  Mark stayed out of the way of others.....   The finishing order;

  1. Johnny Johnson
  2. Adam Johnson
  3. Ross Smith
  4. Justin Melton
  5. Lucas Townsend
  6.  Matt Ohair
  7. Kristi Thompson
  8. Michael Pattison
  9. Wade Reser
  10. Amber Engstrom
  11. Jeremy Wellborn
  12. Chris Woolridge
  13.  Don Garwood
  14. Justin Shoemaker
  15. Nathaniel Mauel
  16. Chris Hinrichs
  17. Chris Heegen
  18. Mark Beville

80/85cc Jr Gearbox had a good turnout including 2 out the top-five SKUSA Pro-Moto points holders in this prestigious series.  The finishing order;

  1. Jon Beason
  2. Garret Napier
  3. Jon Boldt
  4. Josh Klapperick
  5. Chad Bryant
  6. Quentin Templeton

Formula 125 Stock Light brought Forrest Sutherland back, one of the few shifter kart drivers to successfully campaign a Kawasaki motor.  One of the great things about KART rules with 125's is they had the foresight to add ICC motors to dice with the 125 Moto based power.  Once again, they proved these two to be very equal.  The finishing order;

  1. Cody Hadley
  2. Reed Froelich
  3. Forest Sutherland
  4. Jonathan Koorsen
  5. Taylor Huddleston
  6.  Jeff Carter
