SKUSA Red River Report Race 3

RAce 3 Report

May 24 - Red River Series Race 3 at NTK in Denton Texas brought a field of 40 entries.  With several folks choosing to spend the Memorial Day Weekend at the lake, and some not willing to brave the 90% forecast for thundershowers turn-out was light.

On Saturday the tears from the clouds held back and the track was dry by 10:00 AM but very green from the rain the night before.  With a thick cloud cover and high humidity the track surface never really reached the normal adhesion level leaving lap times about a second off from normal during qualifying.  Late Saturday night brought out heavy rains with nearly 4" of rain falling, 50MPH wind gusts, and small hail, leaving a new lake in the track infield.  Fortunately it was not on the track surface having little effect on Sunday racing.

May 25 - With the Saturday night storm cleared out by 9:00 AM, a few sprinkles lingered and the cloudy humid conditions left several puddles on the track.  Race Director Jon Anderson declared the first race a rain setup as the skies remained threatening.  Off-line the track was too wet making passing a non-option with slicks, and there was just enough water on some portions of the line to warrant rain tires.  These are the most difficult of weather calls to make because if it does not rain,  a set of rain tires could get used up.  On the other hand, running slicks under these conditions would have likely resulted in more then a few off-track excursions.

Formula 80 Jr was the first class out.  The twelve car field took on full rain set-up and put on a great battle of clean racing and lots of passing in the first heat race.  As the track dried an no rain fell, several competitors chunked the right rears of their soft rain tires yet most were still usable for another day.  James Bayliss made an exciting exit from the track between turns 3 - 4, into a 6" deep puddle with 20' tall roostertails!

After the first heat race, Jon Anderson made the call for a dry race, and the clouds cooperated with only a few very light sprinkles through the rest of the day.  The track remained very green until 2/3s of the way through the Finals when the sun broke out.  By the last race the track was returning to normal grip.

Notable stuff

1) Justin Melton running in the TAG class finished with a strong margin of victory 3 seconds short of lapping the field.  Justin has demonstrated he is an up & coming driver having dominated every class he has run in his short racing career.  Too young to compete in the Rotax Nationals, he is clearly destined to achieve the same legendary status as Jordan Musser has earned.

2) Brandon Timte of Formula 80Jr has been making significant progress in moving into the front of the 80Jr pack.  Having just upgraded to a Birel with SRS power, and taking some coaching from tuning master Rik Crews, this young pilot set qualifying lap over half a second ahead of the field.

3) Lap times between S1 and FIC, are just about identical.

4) Michael Johnson of the Evolution R/T racing team mentioned the new Evolution R/T chassis may be going into production later this season.

5) Next Red River race will be at OMC July 4-6 in conjunction with the US Shifter Nationals.   Preliminary Press Release on this event, with more coming.  Red River Regional racing will be part of the Sunday racing action and the Red River results will be scored exclusively of the overall results.  The USSN has gained even more meaning as a National Championship among all series as the Stars of Tomorrow series has been added to the organizational line-up with several overlapping dates with SKUSA National race meets.

6) Watch for an upcoming Kartweb Reports! video from the SKUSA Red River Regionals Race 3 in Denton.
