80cc Novice
racing from the 2003 SuperNationals
Introduced to SKUSA at the SuperNats, the 80cc
Novice class was originally proposed as a replacement class to the 60cc
Novice at a time when the Kawasaki 60cc motors were getting scarce. It
was first packaged and presented to IKF in 2001 later becoming one of
the “too many” shifter classes among IKF. Whether or not the class will
fly and eventually replace the 60cc Novice has yet to be determined, and
the number of entries will ultimately decide the fate of the class.
Briefly, the rules require a stock CR80 cylinder and head with an
exhaust restrictor. From the sound of the motors, they typically make
the most power in the lower RPM band, as the leaders who ran away with
the race was shifting probably 1000 – 1500 RPM lower then anyone else
was. That is not intended to suggest that anyone was outside of
specifications, just that the tuning door is wide open at the moment.
