SWRA Race Results from Oak Hill September 11 2004
Oak Hill was originally designed as the ultimate 250cc Moto GP track.
It turns out to be the perfect track for a shifter. The pit
straight leads into a flat-out 90 MPH left hander, slightly downhill to
the kink where it points uphill - with a slight jump - THROUGH the apex
- talk about pucker factor! The
Mychron shows about 100 MPH then jumps to 115 - while the kart squirts
about 3 feet to the right. The first few laps are scary. By
about lap 10, you find yourself rushing
to get back to the kink.
Lots of elevation changes with the most famous being
Chicken Hill. Can you
take Chicken Hill flat out or are ya chicken?
More like a giant sprint track, Oak Hill demands the driver to carry
speed through every variety of turn from sweepers to off-camber
decreasing radius turns. Shifters drop to the bottom of
second gear into the clubhouse turn, with third gear through most other
turns. This track has a magic about it that few other road courses
possess.
As the home of the 2005 IKF Road Racing Grand Nationals, Oak Hill
will be getting plenty of attention through the year.
The South
West Racing Association (SWRA) has enjoyed Oak Hill for several
years. President Gary Robinson has assembled a top notch regional
series where it's not uncommon for 25 or more 125 shifters take to the
track at the same time.
September 11 & 12 brought 186 entries to the two days of racing under
sunny Texas skies for round 6 of 7.
