BIREL SUCCESS AT IKF REGION 7 OPENER |
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 7, 2006
Drivers showed well on first event held at California Speedway
THREE OAKS, MI (February 7, 2006) – Birel drivers came home with
several top finishes this past weekend at Cal Speed Kart Track, the
opening round of the IKF Region 7 Southwestern Super Series. The
classes were full of national caliber drivers with large fields
sitting on each grid. The team from Dave’s Performance Karting, one
of the top dealers for the MRP-Birel dealer group had several
drivers on the podium on the weekend. Representatives from MRP
Motorsport were on hand to assist Birel customers as well including
MRP-Birel AMERICA engineer, Tim Lobaugh. |

Michael Varela put on a clinic both Saturday and Sunday as he swept
the HPV-3 race on Saturday and also took home the Senior Super
Sportsman final on Sunday with a last lap pass aboard his Birel R30.
“The advice that both Tim (Lobaugh) and Dave (DPK) gave us over the
weekend was an asset to get us these wins,” said Varela. “Thankfully
we have been near perfect since we have moved into the senior class
and we hope to continue this streak.”
It was in the Junior classes, however, where the biggest fields and
tightest racing was found. Cameron Jocelyn looked like a seasoned
pro driver and took 3rd in Saturday’s Jr. Super Sportsman then
claimed his first IKF Region 7 win in HPV-2 on Sunday. Jocelyn
shared the front row with teammate, Taylor Miinch, to make the start
of the final an all Birel front row. Miinch struggled after being
hit early on but recovered to an 11th place finish in the 31-kart
field.
In the TaG class, it was newcomer, Justin Miller, taking home 2nd
place in his first IKF Region 7 appearance in a tough 18-kart field.
It was Miller’s 4th TaG race ever and he claimed the pole and led
much of the 20-lap feature on his R-31 from Team AZ Karting before
being passed among lapped traffic.
In the Cadet classes the Team DPK duo of Lou Pagano and Tyler Vance
showed very well. Pagano took 5th in Junior 1 in the 34-kart field
with Vance coming home 14th. On Sunday however, the two showed they
can run up front and started the final from the front row after a
brilliant 1-2 finish in HPV-1 Cadet. Pagano would finish 3rd overall
after a stuck ring slowed his straightaway speeds towards the end of
the event. Vance held on to the lead pack but eventually faded to an
8th place finish in the 34-kart field.
Full results of the event can be seen at

round two of the Florida Winter Tour at Moroso Raceway before moving
on to testing and SW Regional Cup events in Texas and Oklahoma.
