BIREL DOMINATES WINTER CUP EVENT AT LANATO, ITALY
Birel drivers start ’06 season with a sweep of victories in each class; Genni (JICA), Millroy (ICA) & Cesetti (FA)

LANATO, Italy (February 23, 2006) - The 2006 racing season for the Lissone-based manufacturer couldn't have had a better start. The “Winter Cup”, the preseason warm-up event for the elite karting teams kicked off this past weekend with an exceptional performance by Birel drivers and teams, taking fantastic victories in each of the three categories; FA, ICA & JICA.

Milroy (ICA) takes all the bind out on this turn
In Formula A, the premier class, Birel drivers placed five drivers among the top ten including Birel factory pilot, Sauro Cesetti and British team-mate, John Lancaster, taking home the 1st and 3rd positions. Joackim Stephansen (Savani Comp.), Mark Litchfield (PF Int’l) and Jaime Croxford (PF Int’l) took home 5th, 6th and 8th for their Birel teams.

The ICA round saw Germany’s Marco Wittman of the Birel Motorspot team win the pole. Unfortunately an engine failure would ruin his chances of victory, though the torch was passed on to Team RFM’s Ollie Millroy. The Englishman controlled the race and pulled away to a good margin to stand atop the podium. The highly contested JICA battle showcased a 1-2 Birel finish in the final with Team MgM’s Luca Genini taking the win followed by Englishman Will Stevens (Team JPR).

The result was meant to prove the hard work that Birel had put in during the off-season in Research & Development on the 2006 product line, regardless of the choice of engines and tires utilized. This fact is emphasized also by numbers in terms of registered drivers: the Birel chassis were the most represented in all classes and above all had more entries qualified for the Finals. On this matter, the significant achievements in Formula A speak for themselves: 14 among the 34 finalists were Birel drivers and overall the make represented over 30% of all chassis in the combined finals.

Birel SpA is equally pleased that both their M-line and R-line of chassis performed so well in the opening event of the year. These same chassis will be on display at the Kart Marketing International this coming weekend in the booth of the North American importer, MRP Motorsport.
