SHOCKWAVE CHASSIS DEBUT AT THE
FLORIDA WINTER TOUR ROUND 1 |
February 8, 2006
Press Release
Shockwave, Mike Wilson and the Florida Winter Tour
Shockwave Karting debuted its new chassis line in fine style at the
Florida Winter Tour in Homestead. The new line starts with a frame
designed and built by 6 time World karting champion, Mike Wilson.
Mike was on hand in Florida to help debut the new karts and he did
not go home disappointed. With two class wins and a kart running in
the top five of every class they competed, only bad racing luck
prevented even more top spots on the podiums.

Shockwave Karting Stock Moto
As the class sponsor, Shockwave Karting was hoping for a good
result. Greg Welch did not disappoint. Greg set the pace every time
on track for this class, winning the pre-final and main events both
days. The only thing Greg did not take in Stock Moto was the pole on
Saturday. That was due to a sick engine on the pre-grid. A very rare
piston failure prevented him from taking the green flag for
qualifying. But he more than made up for it in the pre-final.
Starting dead last, he not only passed every kart in his own class,
but many of the ICC and built moto karts in the combined masters and
expert heavy class.
Over the weekend, Greg finished as high as 5th overall in the
combined class of 30+ karts. It was great fun to watch the stocker
mix it up with karts that had significantly more power. It just goes
to show that a well set up kart driven to its potential can give
very satisfactory results.
FirstKart.com Rotax Senior
It what may well have been the most competitive class of the
weekend, again the Mike Wilson chassis karts showed well. But for a
little bad luck, they would have done even better. Ariel Castor, FWT
Rotax champion, on his Mike Wilson chassis qualified 4th on
Saturday, moved to 2nd in the pre-final only to have a bit of bad
luck and was shuffled to 4th in the main. |

Greg Welch was also in this class and was running a kart that first
turned a wheel on Friday. He qualified 16th but moved up smartly in
the pre-final to finish 8th. In the main, he again was moving up,
running in 6th and pushing hard for 5th, when the kart in front spun
giving Greg nowhere to go. An unfortunate racing accident that was
nobody’s fault. But it did make the team look forward to Sunday.
The entire field was stronger on Sunday, and Ariel qualified 11
while Greg improved to 14th. Both drivers moved forward in the
Pre-final to 7th for Ariel and 12th for Greg. In the main, Ariel had
a great run to finish on the podium in 3rd while Greg was held up a
bit on the start, but still improved to 10th in the final standings.
With better luck in Moroso, Shockwave and Mike Wilson should realize
better results.
CMW Engines Rotax Junior
The junior class was stacked with quality drivers but Jarvis Gennari
managed a very respectable 4th in qualifying on Saturday. Disaster
struck in the pre-final, and he was forced to start the main in
23rd. Jarvis took his Mike Wilson chassis with Shockwave components
and stormed through the field, finishing 4th. He was looking for
more come Sunday.
With Mike Wilson on hand to help his customers, Sunday dawned full
of promise. The field was stronger also and young Gennari could only
manage 8th in qualifying. In the pre-final, Jarvis moved up to 6th.
Farther back, Chris Girvin in his brand new Shockwave kart was over
coming a rough Saturday and Sunday qualifying by moving up from 26th
to 16th. In the main, it was hard fought and Gennari was unable to
improve to finish 6th Meanwhile Girvin capped a difficult weekend by
coming up to 8th at the stripe. A fine result given how far he had
to start in the field. They too will be looking for more in Moroso.
RJ Gator’s MiniMax
Things were looking very good for Nick Neri in the MiniMax class.
After a great qualifying effort for 2nd, he was looking for the top
rung. Unfortunately, bad racing luck overtook Neri and he finished
3rd in the pre-final and 4th in the main. Still great results in
such a strong field, but they were looking for more. Sunday started
great, pole in qualifying. But a bit of flu started to work against
the young pilot. In the pre-final he finished 3rd, The main proved
to be a bad day with an 11th spot finish.
Farther back Jack West was working through his problems on Saturday,
but was steadily improving. On Sunday, he qualified 7th and held
that position through the pre-final. In the main, Jack moved up
nicely and finished in 4th. Young Mr. West will be looking for
better results at Moroso as he debuts a new Shockwave chassis for
that event.
All and all, it was a very good outing for Shockwave Karting and
Mike Wilson. For the limited number of Mike Wilson and Shockwave
karts that were there, the results were very satisfying. The entire
team is looking forward to Moroso, and every team member is working
hard to improve. As with Homestead, Mike Wilson will be on hand to
help get his karts to the front.
