2002 Final at LeMans-Bugatti
Martin Hines wins Championship!
Two divisions came to contest the final match of the year with Martin Hines (Division 1) leading the overall points. There was some question as to whether Martin was coming at all. As the entry lists were posted only last week, Hines was shown as a contender. The format is typical of American Road Racing with two heats. Forty eight of the ultra fast 250 machines were entered.
In race 1 of the Division 1, 33 cars took to the grid. Caught up with a mechanical problem, Martin Hines was forced to retire before completing the first lap. Francois Vinuales and Damien Payart were fisrt & second but out of the hunt for the championship. Bobo Westman and Torgjer Kleppe took 3rd and 4th with a scant chance of taking the championship in the second race.
The Championship would be decided in race 2. With just one point in favor of Hines over Kleppe, and only a few points behind Westman, it was imparitive that Hines still finished well. On lap 3 Vinules in the lead fell off the track. Payart took a commanding lead with Westman in second by a strong margin. Hines made it to third having a close battle with Kleppe, and took the championship home on the 12th lap.
