Stock Moto: Class of 2009 |
||
|
Most everyone will agree that 2008 was a tough year on the economy.
Nearly all classes of Karting saw reduced entries except one; Stock
Moto. 2009 is projected to also have a weak economy yet Stock Moto
engine packages are still in strong demand. That translates to
larger fields. Except for WKA, all major organizations offer a Stock
Moto class at National and Regional levels. (WKA does have a Stock Moto
class for Road Racing.) Nearly every club offers a Stock Moto
class.
Despite the economic climate 2009 offers Stock Moto racers the biggest and the best racing on the planet. If you plan on attending National races here are a few to consider: 1. Rock Island Grand Prix - Labor Day Weekend The Rock is famous for great racing, relatively low cost, the largest spectator count in Karting, and just plain big fun. Run through the downtown city streets of Rock Island Illinois this event is held on Labor Day weekend rain or shine. The weather is usually picture perfect with temperatures in the 70's. What seems like a simple layout isn't so simple; every turn is unique and two long straights give rise to speed. At the top of the roster is the SKUSA King of the Streets Championship. This is among the nation's most coveted Karting title with past winners including Scott Speed and Alan Rudolph. Formerly running the SKUSA Mod Motos, ICC's were included a few years back as well. Typical of ICC trends, after a few years entry counts diminished. For 2009 the Rock Island staff along with SKUSA replaced the ICC/Mod Moto class with Stock Moto for King of the Streets. Expect record entry counts for 2009. If you can only afford to run one national event in 2009, be sure to plan on racing at Rock Island. 2. SKUSA SuperNationals - Late October Looking back from 2004 the saying "the rumors of their death have been greatly exaggerated". SKUSA has morphed into a fantastic series in the west. The eastern migration is dampened by the economic climate and will likely pick up over the coming years. SuperNats racing isn't for the bottom budget racers. Steep entry costs, and the Las Vegas location probably double the cost of racing Rock Island, but in all fairness, this is probably the most fun race event on the planet. It's like a mini-Monaco without the Mediterranean. No place has better food then Las Vegas. If your budget allows you to indulge, you can't miss the SuperNats. 3. Road Racing Nationals - Summertime If you've never run a road course it's a must do at least once. Road racing truly emphasizes driver skills. At first everyone thinks its all about power; in fact its all about turn exit speed. There simply isn't enough horsepower to make up for a difference of 2 MPH of exit speed on a 60MPH turn.
