Data Acquisition (DA)
About
The purpose of the Data Acquisition Application Section is to
provide an understanding at the practical application layer of DA
systems. There are plenty of guides and manuals that explain how
the DA systems function.
A Portable PC with DA Software can be worth it's weight in gold
for DA analysis and application. Typically a $1000 with a
motor builder will buy 1/2 a second; For half that you can buy
a used Laptop & a new Mychron and drop a second off your lap times.
While there are several systems on the market the most common
systems used in karting are from the Mychron family. They all
operate on the same principals and much of the information here may
be relevant to understanding other systems such as PI or Alfano.
The specifics of this guide will cover utilization of the Race
Studio software from Mychron.
There are 4 layers of Data Analysis;
|
Layer 1 |
Functions
of DA equipment (Functional) |
|
Layer 2 |
Track Testing (Acquisition
of Data) |
|
Layer 3 |
Analyzing the Data
(Application - Analysis) |
|
Layer 4 |
Tuning (Application -Tuning
Changes) |
Layer 1 the functionality of Data Acquisition systems and
components will be briefly discussed in this guide. Most
manufactures have on-line technical guides that provide more detail
then anyone ever wanted to know.
Layer 2 is really what the Handling section is all about.
As the on-board systems only measure and store data from the various
sensors, the driver is still a key component of a Data Acquisition
system. Sometimes there are conflicts between what the driver and
DA system. That's up to the tuner to resolve, but one simple point
to consider - the DA system has no emotions.
Layer 3 & 4 Instructions and Training Videos are only
available to Kartweb Subscribers.
Layer 3 is the missing piece from DA systems, and probably
the most difficult to describe in words. That's why we produced a
video to help explain how it works. We will use the Race Studio
Software and explain how it works. More importantly, we'll explain
how to APPLY the results of the analysis to the set-up.
Layer 4 is based on making intelligent decisions from the
analysis to apply changes to the setup.
