Installing Race Studio Software

About

This section gives basic information on selecting the version of Race Studio software for your Data Logger as well as which manuals to use for installation.

Mychron has released several versions of Race Studio, at the time this document was written version 2.17.8 was released.   The Race Studio installation exec installs both programs.

Race Studio software is downloadable from Mychron at no cost from the AIMSPORTS website.  The unit will work on Windows 98, 2000, and XP systems, but there are often issues with Windows 2000 Operating Systems.

Versions are important as some of the later versions won't support some of the earlier Data Loggers.

Software Compatibility

Data Logger Best Race Studio Version
Mychron II 1.03.19
EVO3 2.17.08
Drack 2.16.04
Mychron 3 2.17.08

The principals between the various versions are the same however some of the features and presentations have changed slightly.  This Guide has been written and developed using version 2.17.00

Downloading and Installing

Downloading

From the AIMSPORTS website select the applicable version and download the exec to a safe location (ie My Download Folder) on your drive.

Create a Folder titled Mychron under My Documents.

Download the applicable Manuals for Race Studio (Configuration and Analysis) into the Mychron Folder.  If you are installing the 2.X family, download the "Race Studio 2 and USB Drivers and Troubleshooting Guide".

Installing

Run the RS@....exe that you downloaded to load the Race Studio Program.  When prompted it should be loaded into the C:\ProgramFiles\AIM Folder - (this filepath will be important later).  Select the Install option.

Open Race Studio - if you get an error about database connections, keep closing the pop-up boxes (maybe 10 or so) until they close.  If this error comes up the first time, close Race Studio and launch it again - if no errors, its good, if errors persist open the  Race Studio 2 and USB Drivers and Troubleshooting Guide and follow instructions - they are pretty straightforward.

Plug in the Data Logger Unit to the PC.  The Windows "Found New Hardware" Dialog Window will pop up - refer to the Race Studio 2 and USB Drivers and Troubleshooting Guide and follow the instructions.  They provide the correct USB driver but you must point the "Found New Hardware" operation to the path they provide.

Unplug the Data Logger Unit and restart Windows (even XP).

Open Race Studio, and plug in the Data Logger.

Click on the System manager menu and select Logger Identification - that will verify if Race Studio is communicating with the Logger.

File Structures

Saving old files depends on which stream of Race Studio versions you have.  There are two crucial types of files to save; Track Maps (*.mp) and Download files (*.drk).

Race Studio 1.X contains these files in the same place under the DATA Folder.  Each track is given it's own Folder and contains both download.  When you save files to a new track, it creates a new folder for that track along with a "trackname".ini file.  If you create a Trackmap from the Download File, it will be placed in this folder.  The "Trackname" Folder can only contain one Trackmap file.  If you want to add a Trackmap file generated from another source you can save it in this folder using the same filename as the Folder.  (Filetype is "mp".)

File paths for Race Studio 1.X data files;

C:\ProgramFiles\AIM\Data\'Trackname'\060403.drk

C:\ProgramFiles\AIM\Data\'Trackname'\'Trackname'.mp

C:\ProgramFiles\AIM\Data\'Trackname'\'Trackname'.ini (file will be automatically generated)

Race Studio 2.X contains these files in a different location and restructures the *.drk data files.  Because of the restructuring required, AIM has provided a tool to import data files from whatever folder you select.

Note that if you use a Track Map file that has the Beacon in a different location as the Download Files, you will need to shift the beacon in the software.
