Evolution RT Kart

"Genius is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration" - Thomas Edison

Tom Johnson is the constructor who has worked with a brilliant design engineer John Gano on a variety of racing cars over the last 25 years. Nearly everything they have built was keenly innovative, and developed into a dominant instrument of competition. Chassis design and motorsports competition is only a hobby for these gentlemen, but the pattern of success they have had suggests that new Evolution RT will become a highly successful chassis.

The Evolution RT A-Frame chassis is still in early development, and many more changes are expected as this team completes more R&D work at their test track, near team headquarters in Texas. The Evolution A-Frame v1, pictured below is the current chassis that was recently driven at the US Shifter Nationals by Michael Johnson in the 125 pro class. This chassis demonstrated exceptional grip in the twisty infield of the Norman, OK. facility along with low tire wear. Had it not been for a radiator hose clamp malfunction, a top five finish was imminent in the chassis' debut outing. This chassis uses a radically altered front end design from the Evolution Y-frame which competed at the Austin promoto event. The A-Frame v2 is already in production which implements a number of other modifications.

There are several unique features about the chassis most obvious is the front kingpin mounting. While the kingpins are mounted to an upper and lower "A-Frame," the unit is held rigid to the chassis by a pullrod attached to the chassis. As the kingpin turns under steering the pullrod arcs causing the kingpin to rise or drop to control the weight jacking, very similar to castor. In this design, the weight jacking is adjusted in seconds rather then minutes.

Added features are in the seat carrying design and the shift lever bellcrank.

Unique as it may be, Tom was quick to point out that this was still in the early design phases and much more development is needed to bring the chassis to fruition. If it proves to be anything like his previous projects, this chassis should turn out to be quite ingenious and competitive, especially at the hands of skilled team drivers Michael and Phillip Johnson. More on this innovative chassis design as information becomes available. You can also check out www.evolutionrt.com for team and chassis information
